164 - Frank STRATTON
John Frank STRATTON was a resident of Gohlis near Leipzig. He was the inventor of a « Selbstthätiger Apparat zur Regulierung des Speisewasserzuflusses bei Dampfkesseln, mit Wasserstands-Indicator und Alarmglocke ».
Having obtained a patent in some German states (Bayern, Oldenburg, Schwarzburg-Sonderhausen, Hessen, …) at the beginning of 1875 he applied on 11 March 1875 for a brevet d’importation in Luxembourg under the title of:
Nouveau système d’alimentation des chaudières à vapeur, avec indicateur du niveau et cloche d’alarme
The corresponding British patent granted on 23 April 1875 summarises the invention as follows: [1]
The apparatus consists of a cylinder which is in communication with the steam and water spaces of the boiler. In this cylinder works a float, the spindle of which rises and falls according to the level of the water. This spindle is connected by a cord or chain with a tap which is in communication with the feed pump. When the water rises in the boiler the tap is opened and allows the pump to draw air, but when the level is lowered the tap is closed and allows the feed water to be forced into the boiler.
The indicator consists of a dial with an index finger which is actuated by the float. This dial and index, with the steam gauge, are placed in the office or other convenient locality. The alarm is also actuated by the float, and it consists of a bell with a spring clapper.
When the spring has been wound up, the spring is held by a ratchet wheel and catch, and when the water rises or falls beyond certain limits, the spring is released by a tappet on the float spindle, thereby allowing the alarm to go off and calling the attention of the engine driver.
The Chambre de commerce gave the following opinion on 12 June 1875:

Il résulte de ce rapport que l'alimentation automatique de la chaudière n'est pas une nouvelle invention. L’utilisation d'un flotteur dans la chaudière comme moteur ou régulateur de l'alimentation automatique, est connue depuis longtemps. Dans tous les appareils pratiques de ce genre, l'alimentation est réglée par le flotteur d'une manière beaucoup plus sûre que dans l'appareil décrit.
Enfin, les experts trouvent que le cylindre spécial contenant le flotteur, l'indicateur de niveau et la cloche d'alarme, décrits dans la demande de brevet, présentent des inconvénients. Par ces raisons, ils sont d'avis qu'il n'y a pas lieu d'accorder le brevet sollicité et la Chambre de commerce s'est ralliée à cette conclusion.
