BARTH was born on 21 March 1816 in Luxembourg-city as one of the 13 children of Jean BARTH and Catherine PAQUET; father Jean was a vitrier and lived in 61 rue des Capucins.
Jean BARTH junior married Catherine FRISINGER in 1843 and they also had 13 children. Catherine was the daughter of a boucher in 199 rue St Philippe.
BARTH jr was a ferblantier in the city of Luxembourg. He lived first in 283 rue du Fossé, followed by 227 and 5 rue des Charbons and finally moved to 2 rue Guillaume.
At the beginning of October 1842 BARTH filed his first patent application [2] in Luxembourg for a
Chauffe-pieds de voyage
While a description of the invention has survived in the Register of granted patents, in the form of a transcript of the original text, the drawings accompanying the description have not been reproduced in the Register. The administrative files of Luxembourg and La Haye provide no additional technical information.
The invention appears to have consisted in a kind of hot water bottle with a cavity for placing the feet.
Since BARTH had not complied with all the formal requirements, the Gouverneur returned to him the documents that he had filed on 7 October 1842 with the following message:
Les demandes qui sont présentées pour obtenir des brevets d'invention, d'importation ou de perfectionnement doivent, conformément aux dispositions de l'arrêté royal du 17 août 1827 n° 151 être appuyées d'une déclaration signée par laquelle les pétitionnaires s’obligent …
Comme la demande que vous avez formée pour l'obtention d'un brevet d'invention d'un chauffe pieds de voyage n'est pas appuyée de la déclaration ci-dessus mentionnée et qu'elle n'a du reste pas été présentée non plus dans la forme prescrite je me vois obligé de vous la renvoyer ci-joint avec les dessins y annexés à l'effet d'être complétée si vous voulez qu'il y soit donné suite.
BARTH complied with the formalities on 26 October 1842 and presumably requested at the same time that the grant fee be waived.
The patent was granted on 28 November 1842 and a separate note was sent from the Chancelier d’Etat, par interim BLOCHAUSEN to the Gouverneur announcing that BARTH had been granted a prime d’encouragement by Sa Majesté:
Sa Majesté a daigné accorder au sieur Jean Barth, ferblantier à Luxembourg, un brevet d'invention de cinq années pour un chausse-pied de voyage, ainsi qu'une prime de 150 florin à titre de prime d'encouragement, pour le mettre à même de payer les droits qui se montent à une somme égale.
Once the appropriate budget account had been agreed between Luxembourg and La Haye for booking the prime d’encouragement, the granting procedure could be completed.
The news of the grant was transmitted to Barth via the official local channel, on 15 December 1842; the Gouverneur wrote to the Administration of the City of Luxembourg:
À Messieurs les bourgmestre et échevins de Luxembourg
Messieurs,
Je vous prie d'informer le sieur Jean Barth, ferblantier à Luxembourg, qu’ensuite de la demande qu’il a présentée à cet effet, Sa Majesté a daigné lui accorder un brevet de 5 années pour l'invention d'un chauffe-pieds de voyage, ainsi qu'une somme de 150 florins pour servir à titre de prime d'encouragement pour le mettre à même de payer les droits de brevet, s’élevant également à 150 florins.
Vous voudrez bien le prévenir aussi que ce brevet vient d'être envoyé au receveur de l'enregistrement de cette ville, chez qui il aura à se présenter pour acquitter les droits sus-mentionnés ainsi que les frais du timbre du brevet. Il m'enverra ensuite la quittance du paiement de ces 150 florins pour être jointe à la préparation de liquidation à son profit, de la prime que Sa Majesté lui a accordée .
Le Gouverneur
BARTH showed his invention at the Exposition de l’Art et de l’Industrie held in Luxembourg-city in 1851. One of the visitors (signing as N. ancient fabricant), who published a review of the exhibits in the Courrier du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg in 1852, commented: [3]
Le chauffe-pieds exposé par M. J. BARTH sera vivement apprécié par les voyageurs; il nous semble par ses dimensions, être construit pour des pieds bien étroits.
